Pedalers on the Route: Raleigh Jewish Community Cycling Team for the Bike MS Ride
Last year, a small group of cyclists formed the Jewish Community Cycling Team in preparation for participation in the Sept. MS Bike Ride and to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis research, education & services. Renamed 'Pedalers on the Route' (to a cure), the team would like to add new members from the Triangle Jewish Community of Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh.
Eighteen hundred riders participated in the 2007 event. The team with seven riders was the 16th highest fundraising team, raising over $19,000, more than many other larger and more established teams.
Aside from the obvious monetary benefits to the MS Society, friendships were forged, riding partnerships were established and everyone had a great time getting in shape. Although some riders are more experienced, the team has a 'no drops' policy during training rides. That means that although some riders pedal at a quicker pace, even the slowest rider has someone behind him/her for safety reasons. Learning to ride in a group safely is a priority.
Training rides are ongoing all summer in various locations and individuals may ride wherever, although a stalwart group meets every Sunday, usually in North Raleigh, at 8:00am to ride together. Beginners are definitely welcome and alternate group rides can be established in other locations around the Triangle.
